Risks and Impacts: Use of Non-Approved Checkouts on Shopify (Yampi, Cartpanda, and Others)

Discover the risks of using unauthorized checkouts on Shopify. Understand why we recommend choosing approved solutions for your online store.

Shopify continues to innovate and has just announced an important update to its checkout functionalities. Now, all merchants can take advantage of the new One-Page Checkout, which is faster, more functional, and offers more payment provider options. Additionally, those on the Shopify Plus plan can benefit from Checkout Extensibility, an innovative set of app-based tools for checkout customization. These improvements ensure a smoother shopping experience for your customers and greater efficiency for your business.

This update will be standard for all Shopify merchants. New payment integrations have already been created, and others are being built to support Shopify's new checkout format. Soon, all historical providers will be available for installation. Check out the Updated Roadmap for Shopify Gateway functionalities.

Previously, these features were only available for some payment methods or required customizations. Now, all merchants can benefit from the checkout updates.

How to enable One-Page Checkout for those using non-Shopify-approved Checkouts ☠️ (Yampi, Cartpanda, and others)?

To enable Shopify's native one-page checkout, you will need to uninstall the unauthorized checkout by following the tips in this post before upgrading (https://www.shopify.com/br/blog/desinstalar-yampi). For more information, contact the support of your external checkout to perform a complete uninstallation.

Why Is It Dangerous to Install Non-Approved Checkouts on Your Shopify Store?

The checkout page is the most important page in your store, as it is where your customers enter personal and payment data. Using non-approved checkouts can compromise the security of this data, exposing personal and banking information of both customers and merchants, posing a significant risk to the operation and brand reputation.

These checkouts use maneuvers to "hijack" Shopify's native checkout, causing several problems, such as errors in data and order synchronization, discrepancies in store information, reporting issues, and conflicts with Shopify's native functionalities. Furthermore, this type of solution can stop working at any time, and Shopify support does not cover problems caused by the use of non-approved checkouts.

Main Problems Caused by Non-Approved Checkouts

Daily, we help merchants and notice some of the most common errors caused by non-approved checkouts. See below to inform yourself and check if the problem you are encountering in your store is on the list.

1. Information Discrepancies

One of the main problems is the difference in information between the Shopify admin and the provider's administrator. This includes discrepancies between what the provider says you sold and what Shopify records, analytics dashboards that don't correctly reflect your conversion rate, and abandoned carts that don't appear in Shopify but are recorded in the external checkout.

2. Incorrect Order Statuses

Orders placed through non-approved checkouts may not be tracked correctly by Shopify's system. This can result in orders with incorrect statuses, such as refunded orders still appearing as paid.

3. Inability to Complete Actions in the Shopify Admin

When a merchant manages an order in the Shopify admin, the system follows the platform's expected behavior. However, this may differ when the order is created by a non-approved checkout, limiting what the merchant can do in the admin.

4. SMS Notifications in English

Orders created by non-approved checkouts may not correctly indicate the customer's location, resulting in SMS notifications being sent in English, Shopify's default language.

5. Errors in Trackers and SSL Certificates

Trackers like Facebook Pixel and Google Analytics do not work correctly as the customer is transferred to an external page. Additionally, changes in DNS records, typically caused by checkouts using Cloudflare, can result in errors in the SSL certificate of the custom domain.

6. Interference with Store Navigation

Non-approved checkouts need to install a link in your store to redirect customers to the external payment provider, resulting in the appearance of a second checkout button. This creates confusion for customers, as well as problems such as differences between what is added to the cart and what appears at checkout, inability to add products to the cart, and difficulty completing purchases.
