How to separate address fields in Shopify checkout and enable validation with the Jataí app.
One of the most common errors in Shopify checkout occurs when address fields are not filled in correctly.
This causes failures in issuing invoices, errors in integrations with ERPs, and manual rework in support.
Jataí , a smart checkout app developed for Shopify stores in Brazil, automatically validates address fields — regardless of whether they are grouped together or separate .
However, Shopify recommends (and we do too) separating the Street, Number, and Neighborhood fields, as this improves validation accuracy and reduces the chance of errors when filling them out.
🚀 Why separate address fields in Shopify?

Shopify's standard checkout process provides a single address field ("Address line 1").
This format works well in other countries, but in Brazil it hinders automatic validation and the correct issuance of NF-e (electronic invoices) .
When Street, Number, and Neighborhood are mixed up, the system cannot easily detect if the customer has forgotten essential information, such as the house number.
By separating the fields — something that needs to be done directly through Shopify , upon request to support — the store has more organized and verifiable data , and Jataí can validate it more accurately .
💡 Jataí works perfectly with both joined and separated fields , but separation improves validation performance and prevents typing errors.
🧭 How do I request the separation of Street, Number, and Neighborhood in Shopify checkout?
This change is not made by Jataí, but by the Shopify team.
Here's how to apply:
-
Access Shopify support via chat or email.
- Request the activation of address field separation at your store's checkout.
- You can copy and send this message:
"Hi! I'd like to enable the feature to separate address fields (Street, Number, and Neighborhood) at checkout in my store." -
Since the feature is still new, the agent may need to consult the internal documentation.
To expedite the process, please mention that this is a standard Checkout Extensibility setting and provide the official Shopify documentation link.
After confirmation, the fields will be displayed separately for all customers.
- How to activate address validation in the Jataí app
With or without the fields separated, Jataí validation is simple to activate:
- In the Shopify dashboard, go to Settings → Checkout .
- Scroll down to the Checkout Rules (Jataí) section.
- Click on Add Rule and select the format that matches your checkout:
- Separate Fields (if Street, Number, and Neighborhood are already enabled by Shopify)
- Fields Together (if the checkout is still in the standard format)
- Uncheck the option “Allow all customers to complete checkout” .
- Click on Activate .
Ready!
From there, Jataí automatically verifies if the address is complete and consistent before the customer finalizes the order.
🔍 What Jataí validates at Shopify checkout
Even with the address fields grouped, Jataí validates:
1. Missing or incorrect postal code , neighborhood , and house number ;
2. Consistency between state, city, and postal code ;
3. Character limit in fields such as name and address;
4. Typographical errors that could prevent integration with the ERP system or shipping company.
All this without needing to edit code and while maintaining the original design of Shopify Checkout Extensibility .
Ensure accurate information from checkout onwards.
Separating address fields is a good practice, but what truly ensures the data arrives correctly is having active validation at checkout .
