Facilitating your customer's payment is one of the fundamental rules for not losing online sales. When it comes to Shopify, there are various payment gateway options. That's why we've put together a comparison to help you choose the best option.
Shopify Checkout Update
Shopify continues to innovate and has now announced a significant update to its checkout functionalities. Now, all merchants can benefit from the new One-Page Checkout, which is faster, more functional, and easier to customize. Additionally, those on the Shopify Plus plan can use Checkout Extensibility, an innovative set of tools for app-based checkout customizations. These improvements ensure a smoother shopping experience for your customers and greater efficiency for your business.
Compatibility with Payment Methods
The update will be standard for all Shopify merchants, provided that the chosen payment method is compatible with the new standard. New payment integrations have already been created, and others are being developed to meet the format of the new Shopify checkout. Soon, all historical providers will be available for installation.
Depending on the payment provider and payment method, the buyer's experience within the Shopify checkout will vary. Check it out:
Credit card:
- Transparent checkout: The form for entering card details and installment options will appear within Shopify's native checkout, without external redirection.
- Redirection: Redirection to an external provider page, where the buyer can enter card details and installments outside of Shopify's checkout.
PIX
- Redirection: For Pix, the buyer will be redirected to an external provider page where the QR code and payment information will be shown automatically.
Boleto
- Redirection: For boleto, the experience is similar to PIX with an external page showing the barcode and payment details.
A provider for each payment method
Merchants can integrate different providers for each payment method in their Shopify stores. For example, using Cielo for credit cards, Mercado Pago for PIX, and Pagar.me for boletos, providing more options and convenience for customers.
Shopify Payment Gateway Roadmap (2025)
It is important to note that some providers do not yet offer payment options directly within the Shopify checkout. In this case, the customer will see the provider's name in the list of payment options, and upon selecting the provider's name, the consumer will be redirected to the gateway page to choose a payment method and complete the purchase.
Providers that are currently being approved to launch apps on Shopify:

- Barte
- Cielo
- Getnet
- Mercado Pago
- Pagar.me

- PagBank
- Pagaleve
